CBSE Class 6 Curriculum 2026-27: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will implement the NEP 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) 2023 from the next academic year. In alignment with this, a three-language system will be introduced in Class 6, starting from 2026-27.
English will be a “Foreign” language besides two Indian languages. This decision aims to improve multilingual proficiency and cultural rootedness among students from the early stage of learning.
CBSE Class 6 Curriculum 2026-27: Language Requirements
Under this new curriculum, here are some major language requirements.
1. According to NEP guidelines, at least two of the three languages must be native to India.
2. English is categorized under the “Foreign Language” list.
3. For the Class 6 curriculum 2026-27, English will be taught as a foreign language apart from two Indian languages.
4. If students choose another foreign language like French or German, it must be accompanied by two Indian languages, as per the policy.
Extended Language Learning Until CBSE Class 10
The third language introduced in classes 6-8 will continue till Class 10 as per NCFSE recommendations. The Class 10 Board examination in 2031 will include a third language exam, unlike the current system, which only allows two languages.
The authorities have assured that learning materials will be developed for nine languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Gujarati, and Bangla, for Class 6 (2026-27 session). Textbooks will be prepared in alignment with the language proficiency requirements of the third language.

The new curriculum aims to enhance cultural awareness and promote multilingual competence among students. It will help connect students with their culture and heritage, thereby promoting awareness of India’s linguistic diversity.
With this new reform, CBSE aims to give students exposure to different Indian languages, promote unity in diversity, and help students develop a national identity.
