Idli Kadai OTT Release: Dhanush’s latest directorial and acting venture Idli Kadai is all set to make its digital debut soon after its theatrical run. Despite opening to mixed reviews and clashing with Rishab Shetty’s Kantara: Chapter 1, Idli Kadai managed to earn Rs 45 crore within 12 days and around Rs 75 crore globally by the end of its run. Alongside Dhanush the cast also includes Nithya Menen, Sathyaraj, R. Parthiban, P. Samuthirakani, Rajkiran, and Brigida Saga in key roles.

Netflix announced the OTT release with a playful post captioned, “Get ready to have a blockbuster breakfast with Idli Kadai.” The film, which hit cinemas on October 1, 2025, will begin streaming on Netflix from October 29 in five languages Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.  Directed, written, and produced by Dhanush under his Wunderbar Films banner along with Aakash Baskaran’s Dawn Pictures, the movie tells the story of Murugan, played by Dhanush, a talented chef working in Bangkok. Having left his village Sangarapuram and his father Sivanesan’s (Rajkiran) famous idli shop years ago, Murugan is now engaged to Meera (Shalini Pandey), the daughter of his wealthy employer Vishnuvardhan. However, his world turns upside down when he learns of his father’s death and returns home. The visit forces him to confront his past, his roots, and the legacy his father left behind.

Meanwhile, the film blends family emotions, food nostalgia, and self-discovery. As Murugan tries to restore his father’s humble eatery, he faces emotional battles and moral choices, while others around him including Vishnuvardhan’s son Ashwin (Arun Vijay) try to pull him back into his high-profile life. The film’s music, composed by G.V. Prakash Kumar, adds warmth to the emotional storytelling.

Critics have described Idli Kadai as a heartfelt family drama with Dhanush’s signature touch of simplicity and sincerity. While it may not have matched the box office performance of Kantara: Chapter 1, it managed to connect with audiences for its nostalgic tone and grounded story. With its upcoming OTT release, Idli Kadai is expected to reach a wider audience and find its second life on streaming serving up a warm, comforting watch just like the idlis it celebrates.
