For Sonu Nigam, the announcement of the Padma Awards on the eve of Republic Day was disappointing. He shared his thoughts through a video message on social media, expressing how singers including Kishore Kumar, Alka Yagnik, Shreya Ghoshal and Sunidhi Chauhan, have not received their due recognition and have not been honoured with Padma awards until now.
Sonu Nigam took to his Instagram handle after the Padma Awards announcement and posted a video. In the clip, he said, “Do aese singers hai jinhone poore duniya ke singers ko inspire kiya hai. Ek ko toh humne Padma Shri pe hi simtaa diya hai, woh hai Mohammed Rafi sahab. Aur ek hai jinko Padma Shri bhi naseeb nahi hua hai, Kishore Kumar ji. Posthumously award mil rahe hai na (There are two singers who have inspired singers all over the world. We have limited one of them with the Padma Shri award, and that’s Mohammad Rafi. The other one didn’t even get a Padma Shri, Kishore Kumar. Awards are being given posthumously, right?)"
He continued, “And among those who haven’t received recognition, Alka Yagnik Ji has had such a long and remarkable career, yet she hasn't received anything so far. Shreya Ghoshal has been showcasing her talent for a long time, and she too deserves recognition. Sunidhi Chauhan has inspired an entire generation with her unique voice, but she too has received nothing so far.”
Concluding his video, Sonu urged people to list the names of singers, actors, and other artists who deserve a Padma Award but have not received it yet. Sharing the post, he wrote, “India and its pending Padma Awardees.”
Fans started reacting to it, one of the users wrote, "Even KK should have been one of the award recipients in my opinion for his contribution to the music industry," while another user commented, "So true @sonunigamofficial bhai… Good that you spoke abt this too.. Coming from you will definitely make a difference… I hope this reaches the people who decide the Padma Awards…"
Sonu’s post came after the government of India announced the prestigious Padma Awards, honouring distinguished individuals for their contributions across various fields.
Meanwhile, in 2022, Sonu Nigam received the Padma Shri from former President Ram Nath Kovind for his contribution to the industry.
