The incident happened at a gathering where a sizable crowd had assembled to hear Vijay, the leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), speak. The actor-turned-politician reportedly arrived late to the event, which made the already swelled audience unruly and challenging to manage. Many people started to feel suffocated, and unconscious as the crowd became congested. The crowd was so large that ambulances had a hard time reaching the injured, as it stretched for hundreds of meters. Supporters are seen in rally footage gasping for air, frantically attempting to create space, and phoning for assistance.

Vijay was clearly troubled by the unrest that was happening. He interrupted his speech to alert the attendees about the approaching ambulances and was observed giving water bottles to those who had passed out. Supporters and party employees also attempted to assist by throwing water bottles into the crowd.
Tamil Nadu is mourning following the Karur disaster, and Rajinikanth's heartfelt words conveys the state's deep sorrow.
