Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport, along with IndiGo, Digi Yatra and global aviation body IATA, have successfully conducted technical trials for a contactless international travel system at the airport.
The system allows passengers to travel abroad without showing their passports and boarding passes. The trials covered the entire journey of the passengers, their tickets, managing their travel plans and moving through the airport using biometric technology.
In the new system, the passengers will be identified through a secure digital identity linked to their faces instead of physical documents.
How does system work?
The face recognition system will be used at checkpoints like entry, security and boarding. A joint press release stated that the passengers could cross without manual verification at every step.

In the said system, a privacy-focused digital identity of the passengers is set up, where they control their data and share it only if and when needed.
This passenger-controlled access technology is called a Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) framework. It means that the identity is stored securely and verified, meaning your identity is stored securely and verified across systems instantly when accessed by passengers.
The system also connects airline apps with airport systems. This helps with seamless sharing of passengers' boarding passes and details automatically without repeated uploads.

Built on Digi Yatra system
The system is built on the Digi Yatra system, which is already in use for domestic travels, but now it has been taken to a step further by testing it for international journeys.
The project is being implemented as a part of IATA's global effort to create "contactless travel" standards across countries.
The move is aimed at allowing passengers to move smoothly between airports worldwide using the same digital identity, the release stated.
