In separate news, Bengaluru Metro commuters may soon face a 45 per cent hike in fares, significantly raising travel expenses across the city. The fare revision follows a recent 15 per cent increase in bus fares by the Karnataka government. The official announcement of the revised metro fares is expected on January 18, with implementation likely from January 20.

A Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) official confirmed that the Fare Fixation Committee’s (FFC) recommendation to increase fares has been approved. The detailed fare structure will be shared soon.

This hike comes on the heels of a bus fare increase across Karnataka’s four state-run transport corporations—KSRTC, NWKRTC, KKRTC, and BMTC—effective from January 5. Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil explained that the revision was necessary due to rising operational costs, including fuel prices and staff expenditures.

Minister Patil highlighted that daily diesel expenses for the transport corporations have risen from Rs 9.16 crore a decade ago to Rs 13.21 crore today, while daily staff costs have surged from Rs 12.95 crore to Rs 18.36 crore. The 15 per cent bus fare hike is expected to generate an additional Rs 74.84 crore monthly revenue, helping address these financial challenges.
