Delhi Weather: The national capital will have to wait a little longer for relief as the southwest monsoon has missed its annual onset date following weeks of sluggish progress across the country. According to the latest forecasts, the monsoon's arrival in Delhi is now expected next week.
Delayed Progress Prompts IMD To Reset Onset Dates
Normally, the seasonal rains are scheduled to arrive in Delhi on June 27, a date that is already significantly later than the historical average. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recently revised its onset dates based on data from 1961 to 2019. The adjustment was made after meteorologists observed that the monsoon is now taking longer to reach parts of Northwest India despite hitting Kerala on time.
Under the revised schedule, the southwest monsoon is expected to hit Chandigarh by June 26, Delhi by June 27, Jammu by June 28, and Jaipur by July 1 before covering the entire country by July 8. This year, however, the system is trudging through peninsular and Central India way behind its normal pace.
As of Friday, June 26, the northern limit of the monsoon passes through Surat (Gujarat), Indore (Madhya Pradesh), Daltonganj (Jharkhand), and Motihari (Bihar). The weather system is yet to enter Uttar Pradesh.
When Will Monsoon Arrive In Delhi?
According to the latest forecast, the monsoon is expected to advance into some parts of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand during the next 3-4 days, while also covering the rest of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar.
After July 2, the system is expected to slowly advance into the remaining parts of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh, as well as some parts of Jammu, Kashmir & Ladakh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, and Rajasthan.

The weather office has issued an alert for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds across more than 20 states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Assam, and Andhra Pradesh.
According to the IMD, gusty winds of up to 80 km/h are expected, which could cause temperatures to drop by 4 to 8 degrees Celsius.
