In a chilling incident in Haryana’s Faridabad, a father-in-law confessed to killing a 24-year-old woman and burying her in a 10-foot pit outside her marital home. The body of Tanu Singh was recovered two months after the murder.

During the investigation, the father-in-law, Bhoop Singh, confessed to killing her. According to police, Bhoop Singh strangled Tanu on the first floor when his wife Sonia and son were not present at home on the night of April 21-22. Later, he disposed of the body in the pit, which was originally dug for water drainage.

"We are currently investigating the possible roles of other family members. The motive appears to be dowry-related, but further inquiries are ongoing," said ACP Rajesh Kumar Lochan.

After killing Tanu, Bhoop Singh lodged a missing person’s complaint, claiming that she was not traceable. He maintained, for weeks, that Tanu had ‘gone to the market’.

Tanu’s sister Preeti claimed that her sister faced harassment over dowry since the early days of the marriage. According to Preeti, Tanu returned to her maternal home within months of marriage in 2023 and stayed there for over a year.

ACP Rajesh Kumar Lohan says, "Tanu and Arun got married on 21 June, 2023. We got a missing report of Tanu that was filed by Arun. Police took cognisance and received some tip-offs from the family. The matter surfaced that Bhoop Singh, father-in-law of the victim, strangled her to death and buried her in a pit in front of the house."

On April 23, Bhoop Singh and his son Arun Singh dug approximately a 10-foot pit under the pretext of drainage construction. Two days later, on April 25, Bhoop Singh went to the police to file a missing complaint for Tanu.

The family managed to hide the murder for two months before the victim’s father raised suspicion about a newly filled pit outside the home. Now, four members of the family — including the husband — are in custody, and the woman’s body has been exhumed and a post-mortem conducted.
