Amid a row over third language policy, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday again targeted the central government by stating that the intention behind "imposing" Hindi is to destroy the regional language. To support his argument, Stalin claimed that the Hindi had already destroyed many languages in the Northern states.
However, BJP replied to his comments by stating that the chief minister's logics were "silly". In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Stalin stated that the Hindi had destroyed several regional languages of states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

He urged the residents of these states to ponder the issue, adding that Uttar Pradesh and Bihar were not "Hindi heartland," but became one as Hindi took over the language space of the regional languages.

Ever wondered how many Indian languages Hindi has swallowed? Bhojpuri, Maithili, Awadhi, Braj, Bundeli, Garhwali, Kumaoni, Magahi, Marwari, Malvi, Chhattisgarhi, Santhali, Angika, Ho, Kharia, Khortha, Kurmali, Kurukh, Mundari and… pic.twitter.com/VhkWtCDHV9
"My dear sisters and brothers from other states, Ever wondered how many Indian languages Hindi has swallowed? Bhojpuri, Maithili, Awadhi, Braj, Bundeli, Garhwali, Kumaoni, Magahi, Marwari, Malvi, Chhattisgarhi, Santhali, Angika, Ho, Kharia, Khortha, Kurmali, Kurukh, Mundari and many more are now gasping for survival," Stalin posted.
"The push for a monolithic Hindi identity is what kills ancient mother tongues. UP and Bihar were never just "Hindi heartlands." Their real languages are now relics of the past," he added.

In another post, Stalin asserted that Tamil Nadu will not accept Hindi just for the convenience of the people from Northern states. He said that the people from the North should learn Tamil just the way Tamil Nadu residents learn Hindi when they travel in the Northern states.
"The BJP here is showing their Hindi loyalty by raising the 'intellectual' question, "How will travelers from the northern states know the names of places if Hindi characters are destroyed?" Let them learn the same way Tamils learn when they go to the northern states!" Stalin suggested.
However, the BJP stated that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister was twisting the facts and the logics from him about Hindi destroying regional languages were "silly".
