Jagran Correspondent, Amritsar: In a major terror crackdown ahead of Independence Day, the Punjab Police have arrested two arms smugglers and recovered a consignment of weapons allegedly sent by Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
According to police officials, they received information that Pakistani smugglers had dropped a weapons consignment using a drone near the border village of Nesta, close to the Attari border.
SSP Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal said that a hand grenade, two AK-47 rifles, and two light machine guns were recovered from the accused.
Weapons Allegedly Meant for Independence Day Attack
During the investigation, the Punjab Police launched a search operation near village Nesta and arrested two suspects. The recovered weapons were found in their possession.
During interrogation, the accused allegedly revealed that the weapons were intended to be sent to Delhi, where Independence Day events were reportedly being targeted. The SSP said the investigation is ongoing and that more significant details could emerge.
Earlier, on June 26, two accused allegedly linked to an international network involving weapons, drugs, and hawala transactions operating across the border were arrested. Two submachine guns and eight pistols were recovered from them. Police had said these weapons were also intended to be supplied to Delhi.
At the time, investigators had expressed suspicion that a large quantity of weapons was being smuggled from Pakistan and collected in the national capital to carry out a major incident on Independence Day.
One of the accused, identified as Afghan national Jagjit Singh, was reportedly residing in Tilak Nagar, Delhi.
