A CRPF jawan allegedly shot and killed two of his colleagues before taking his own life at a camp in Manipur on Thursday, news agency PTI reported citing official sources. At least eight people sustained injuries in the incident. The incident occurred at a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp in Lamphel located in Manipur’s Imphal West district at around 8.20 pm.
The accused who opened fire has been identified as Havildar Sanjay Kumar. A constable and a sub-inspector of the force were killed on the spot in the firing incident. He later turned the gun on himself and has been declared dead, news agency PTI reported citing sources.
The development comes on the same day when President’s rule has been imposed in strife-torn Manipur. After the President's rule was imposed in Manipur, security agencies have been placed on high alert to prevent any disruption by banned terrorist groups in the region.
A heavy deployment of forces has been made in the Imphal valley areas, which have recently witnessed attacks on police personnel by cadres of the Arambai Tenggol group, PTI reported citing officials. According to the officials, Assam Rifles and other paramilitary forces will be reportedly conducting a flag march in Imphal city to avoid any untoward situation.
The President’s rule was imposed in Manipur days after BJP leader N Biren Singh resigned from the chief minister’s post amid ongoing ethnic violence in the northeastern state. Singh’s resignation came nearly 21 months after the ethnic violence broke out in Manipur which resulted in the deaths of over 250 and displaced several people.
A Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) notification stated that President Droupadi Murmu is of the opinion that "a situation has arisen in which the government of that state cannot be carried on in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution".
“Now, therefore, in the exercise of the powers conferred by Article 356 of the Constitution, and of all other powers enabling me in that behalf, I hereby proclaim that I – assume to myself as President of India all functions of the Government of the State of Manipur and all powers vested in or exercisable by the Governor of that State," the notification further read.
