Hours after being detained by the Assam Police, Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) leader Ashutosh Ranka said on Sunday evening that the "illegal detention" of him and other party volunteers had "finally ended".
Ranka, along with more than 40 CJP volunteers, was picked up by the police from the residence of opposition Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) leader Kunki Chowdhury at Chowdhury Tilla earlier in the day, ahead of a scheduled meeting.
Ranka announced his release in a post on X (formerly Twitter), saying he had been released along with the other detainees.

He was in Assam to attend a meeting scheduled for 10 am at Assam Shree Parshuram Seva Sadan on Kharga Choudhury Road in Athgaon. The venue was later shifted to Chowdhury Tilla, opposite the Assam Secretariat, after organisers alleged that the original venue had been pressured into cancelling the booking.
CJP members Ankit Bhardwaj, Akash Prem, Varun Agrawal and Anam were also detained along with Ranka. He had earlier said that the cancellation of venues would not stop the party from holding its programme in Assam.
“The illegal detention by Assam Police has finally ended,” Ranka wrote on X. He further stated that the CJP team had asked the police to drop them off at the place where they had been picked up "illegally in the first place."

Reacting to Ranka's release, CJP chief Abhijeet Dipke said, “Abey yaar… I was actually looking forward to joining your strike at the police station tomorrow.” Ranka replied to the CJP founder, saying, “Sorry Shaktiman!”

Earlier, Dipke had said he would fly from Delhi to Assam on Monday morning if Ranka was not released from detention.
"We are not going to cave in to threats of arrest or jail. Feel free to arrest me at the airport itself tomorrow," Dipke had posted earlier in the day.
Before his detention, Ranka had accused the Assam government of trying to prevent the CJP from raising questions about the condition of the state's schools and other issues.
Dipke had reacted soon after the CJP team was detained, saying that he would also travel to Assam with other party members. He wrote on X, "Himanta (Biswa Sarma) can arrest us all."
