Two Pakistan-made skin-whitening creams have come under the scanner in India after the country’s drug regulator found heavy metals in the products above the permitted limits. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) on Tuesday warned people against buying or using Goree Beauty Cream and Chandni Whitening Cream, calling both products unauthorised cosmetics.

Pakistan-Made Creams Flagged In India

Issuing a public notice, the CDSCO has asked authorities to make sure the creams are not sold, distributed or advertised in India. The alert comes amid concerns over unregistered cosmetics entering the Indian market. The regulator has identified Goree Beauty Cream as an unauthorised cosmetic. Additionally, tests carried out by the regulator found heavy metals in the cream above the specified limits.

The product also did not have the required registration for import into India. Similarly, Pakistan-made Chandni Whitening Cream, has also been flagged for similar reasons. According to tests, excessive levels of heavy metals were found in the cream. The product did not have the required import registration certificate. CDSCO has advised consumers not to buy either product or not to use them if they have already purchased them.

While the CDSCO notice does not say exactly which heavy metals were found in these two creams, it is important to note that heavy metals can be harmful to the human body, especially when someone is exposed to them for a long period.

Where Were They Being Sold?

The alert has also raised questions about how these products were being sold in India despite not having the required import registration. The creams were reportedly available on online marketplaces, including Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, and Snapdeal. Some listings showed them as "Made in India", even though the products have been manufactured in Pakistan.

In some cases, the product name, manufacturer details, or packer information was not fully visible or available. Notably, following the Pahalgam terror attack, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade has imposed a total prohibition on all trade with Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Amazon came under scrutiny over the listing of Goree Beauty Cream. The product was initially listed with India as the country of origin and mentioned Neha Organic as the manufacturer and packer, as reported by Business standard. Amazon later removed the listing. Flipkart and Meesho are also expected to take similar action.
