Tamil Nadu Road Project: In a key connectivity upgrade, the Centre has approved the construction of a 4-lane Paramakudi - Ramanathapuram Section (46.7 km) in Tamil Nadu. The major towns and cities that will be connected include Madurai, Paramakudi, Ramnathapuram, and Rameswaram.

The project has been approved by the Union Cabinet. Providing details, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the project will be developed on Hybrid Annuity Mode (HAM).

The 46.7 km section is part of the Madurai – Dhanushkodi Corridor (NH-87). While the road from Madurai to Paramakudi is already a 4-lane highway, the route from Paramakudi to Ramnathpuram is a 2-lane highway. The stretch, along with the alternate state highways, experiences heavy congestion due to high traffic volumes, especially in densely populated stretches and key towns along the corridor.

Once completed, the proposed highway will decongest the existing corridor, improve safety, and cater to the mobility needs of rapidly growing towns such as Paramakudi, Sathirakudi, Achundanvayal, and Ramanathapuram.

5 National Highway, 3 State Highways to be integrated

One of the key features of the project is that it integrates with 5 major National Highways (NH-38, NH-85, NH-36, NH-536, and NH-32) and 3 State Highways (SH-47, SH-29, SH-34).

For the project, the Centre has allocated a civil cost of Rs 997.63 crore and a land acquisition cost of Rs 340.94 crore. The total cost of the project is Rs 1,853.16 crore.

This will enhance multi-modal integration by connecting with 2 major Railway Stations, 1 Airport, and 2 minor ports, thereby facilitating faster movement of goods and passengers across the region. Connectivity to airports, railway stations and ports:

Airports: Madurai, Ramnad (Naval Air Station)

Railway Stations: Madurai, Ramehswaram

Minor Port: Pamban, Rameswaram
