Marking its electoral debut, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Sunday announced its candidates for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly Election with actor-turned-politician Vijay set to contest from Perambur and Trichy East.

Among other TVK leaders, N Anand will contest from T Nagar, P Venkataramanan from Mylapore, Adhav Arjuna from Villivakkam, Sengottaiyan from Gopichettipalayam, Arun Raj from Tiruchengode. Vijay will be going against DMK's sitting MLA RD Shekar, who will contest from Perambur. He is also pitted against the sitting MLA and DMK candidate Inigo Irudayaraj in Trichy East.

"Vote for whistle, it's a whistle revolution election," Vijay said while announcing the names of the candidates of his party during a press conference. TVK has the poll symbol of the whistle.

Tamil Nadu will go to the polls in a single phase on April 23, covering a total of 234 constituencies in the State. Counting scheduled for May 4.The current tenure of the assembly ends on May 10. The main contest is expected to be between Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), which includes DMK, Congress, and Other parties, and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) as allies.

Earlier, Vijay had confirmed that TVK will contest the polls alone. While speaking at an indoor Iftar event in Mamallapuram, Vijay advised his followers to avoid the reports suggesting an alliance with any party. He further stated that TVK believes in secularism and socialism, adding that there will be no compromise with the core principles.

He further asserted that TVK will not compromise with its core ideological principles- secularism and socialism, drawing applause from the crowd. "Let me clarify one thing here- we always belong to the secular ideology and secular social justice political stand- we will never compromise on that," he said.
