In a bizarre incident, a 40-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh's Jhansi, a mother of two sons and grandmother to two grandsons, eloped with her 35-year-old lover. She also allegedly took her daughter-in-law’s jewellery and Rs 40,000 in cash with her.
The Uttar Pradesh Police have registered a case based on a complaint filed by the woman's husband and have launched an investigation.
The incident took place in Syawari village, located in the Mauranipur area of Jhansi. The woman, identified as Sukhwati, fled with her lover, Amar Singh, who is reportedly five years younger than her, according to News18 Hindi.
According to police officials, Sukhwati’s husband, Kamta Prasad, revealed that his wife had gone to work at brick kilns in Bhind, Madhya Pradesh, about two and a half years ago. It was there that she met Amar Singh Prajapati, a resident of Bihuni village.
While working together, the two developed a romantic relationship. When Kamta Prasad discovered the affair, he brought his wife back home, but the couple reportedly continued to meet in secret. He claimed that despite several warnings, his wife maintained contact with Amar. On one occasion, he caught her speaking with him on the phone, and even his daughters-in-law had seen her frequently talking to Amar.
Recently, while Kamta was in Jhansi for his son’s medical treatment, Sukhwati allegedly took advantage of his absence. She stole her daughters-in-law’s jewellery, cash, and other valuables from the house before fleeing with her alleged lover.
The incident has deeply affected the family. According to Kamta, the daughters-in-law now stay indoors, and he and his sons have confined themselves to their home out of shame. He added that despite having children and grandchildren, his wife chose to pursue a romantic relationship at this stage of life and said she deserves strict punishment.
