West Bengal Assembly Election 2026: As the eyes of the nation turn toward the high-stakes West Bengal Assembly election results on Monday, May 4, the political landscape stands at a historic crossroads. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) is fighting to secure a fourth consecutive term, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is fighting hard to form its government for the first time in the state.
There are a total of 294 assembly seats in the state, and many are witnessing fierce contests that have made the final outcome difficult to predict. Analysts are focusing on 37 key seats. These seats are known as "bellwether seats" and carry significant historical weight as the party that has won the majority of them has gone on to form the government in every election since 1977.
What Are Bellwether Seats And Why Are They Important?
According to a report by Jagran.com, these 37 bellwether seats represent approximately 13 per cent of the state's 294 constituencies. They are graphically spread across the state and include all categories of seats, including general, Scheduled Caste (SC), and Scheduled Tribe (ST).
Interestingly, about 15 to 20 per cent of these bellwether seats are located within the areas of Kolkata, South Bengal, and Southwest Bengal. Seats like Bhawanipur, Diamond Harbour, Ausgram, Udaynarayanpur, and Magharpur East have often gone to the winning party.
The predictive power of these areas is so significant that election analyst Dorab Sopariwala suggests even a combination of the "super bellwether" seats across India would fail to match these 37 constituencies in Bengal.
Why Is West Bengal Different From Other States?
According to Sopariwala, West Bengal's political landscape is unique for its high number of bellwether seats compared to other major states, such as Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra.
While Uttar Pradesh has only one such seat with a perfect predictive record and states like Bihar and Maharashtra have none, West Bengal boasts 37 such seats. This high concentration of bellwether seats is primarily due to Bengal's political landscape, where a single party has dominated for a long time.

For the past five decades, the state has been governed by only two major forces: the Left Front, which held power for 34 years, and the Trinamool Congress thereafter. As the governments haven't changed frequently, voters in these regions follow the overall statewide trend. When a party gains popularity across the state, the same pattern is reflected in these constituencies.
This is why, over time, these bellwether seats have become a strong indicator of the election results.
