With less than a year to the Assembly Elections, Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel on Friday reshuffled the entire cabinet. With several new names inducted, Harsh Sanghavi was sworn in as the state deputy Chief Minister.
With the latest rejig, the strength of the Council of Ministers has risen to 26.
Sanghavi is a 40-year-old three-time MLA representing the Majura constituency in Surat. Sanghavi is known to be well-rooted in the organisation and close to the central leadership.
With his elevation, South Gujarat has got a stronger place in the government. His elevation also demonstrates the BJP's effort to strike a balance with young leaders, while eyeing future leadership building.
According to his website, he entered public life at the age of 15 as a social worker. At the start of his political career, he joined the BJP's Yuva Morcha. He became the youngest MLA at the age of 27 by winning the Assembly elections in 2012.
In the prior cabinet, he led several portfolios, including home, sports, youth and cultural activities. He has become the youngest person to become the deputy CM in Gujarat since the formation of the state. He is the youngest Home Minister of the state.
With his appointment, the BJP government has revived the position of the deputy CM after nearly four years. The last deputy CM of Gujarat was Nitin Patel, who served under CM Vijay Rupani.
In 2021, the position was discontinued. Among other ministers who grabbed attention in the cabinet reshuffle is Rivaba Jadeja, the wife of cricketer Ravindra Jadeja.
