Navi Mumbai’s much-awaited international airport officially opened for commercial flights on Thursday, marking its debut on Christmas Day. In the first phase of operations, leading carriers such as IndiGo, Air India Express and Akasa Air have started services, offering connectivity from Mumbai to 16 key domestic cities. Authorities estimate that more than 4,000 travellers will pass through the new terminal on day one.

Navi Mumbai Airport: Airline Operation Details
During its first month of operations, the Navi Mumbai International Airport will function for 12 hours daily, from 8 am to 8 pm, with 23 scheduled departures and the capacity to handle up to 10 aircraft movements every hour. Four carriers will operate domestic services from the new airport: IndiGo, Air India Express, Akasa Air and Star Air, an airport spokesperson confirmed. Sources said IndiGo is expected to dominate most routes, while Akasa Air will connect the airport with cities such as Ahmedabad, Goa, Kochi and Delhi. Air India Express will provide services to Bengaluru and Delhi, and Star Air will operate flights to Goa.

Navi Mumbai Airport: Destinations And Route
The airport will offer connectivity to nine domestic cities, including Hyderabad, Goa and Bengaluru, with Delhi emerging as the busiest route, supported by three daily flights operated by IndiGo, Air India Express and Akasa Air. In its first phase, the airport is set to handle up to 24 scheduled departures each day to 13 destinations and has the capacity to manage as many as 10 aircraft movements per hour, according to an official statement.

Navi Mumbai Airport: Future Capacity And Size
Project And Ownership: Airport has been developed as a greenfield project by NMIAL under a public-private partnership, with Adani Airports Holdings holding a 74 percent stake and CIDCO owning the remaining 26 percent.
Capacity And Infrastructure: Spread across 1,160 hectares, the airport is planned to ultimately serve 90 million passengers annually, featuring two parallel runways, modern terminals and advanced cargo facilities. In its first phase, operations begin with one runway and Terminal 1, capable of handling 20 million passengers per year and 0.5 million metric tonnes of cargo, with expansion expected before mid-2026.
Location Advantage: NMIA is strategically located about 45-50 km from North Mumbai, 35-40 km from South Mumbai, and 35-45 km from the eastern suburbs, improving regional connectivity.
