Chaitra Month or Chaitra Maas is the first lunar month in the Hindu calendar. This month is additionally known as “Madhu Maas” meaning it is a month as sweet as honey. It is believed that Lord Brahma created the universe during this particular month. This year, Chaitra month began on 26th March 2024.

Chaitra Month 2024: Significance Of This Sacred Month
The month is highly significant as it marks the beginning of the new year in various Hindu religious sects and cultures. Additionally, the birthday of Lord Shri Ram is marked during this auspicious month of the Navami tithi (ninth day) of the Shukla Paksha (Bright Lunar Fortnight). Additionally, it is the holy month when the first avatar of Lord Vishnu, Matsyaavatar (Giant Fish), incarnated and brought back the lost Vedas. This day is commemorated as Matsya Jayanti.
This month, the Sun God moves into Aries (Mesha Rashi), the first sign of the zodiac, where the Sun becomes exalted. In many regions of South India, that day is observed as the Vishu festival, also known as Mesha Sankranti. Hanuman Jayanti is also observed on the Purnima tithi (Full Moon Day) during this auspicious month.
The highly auspicious Chaitra Navratri also takes place during this month beginning from Ugaadi day during Uttaraayana.

Chaitra Month 2024: Important Things To Perform During This Sacred Month
Some of the maasa dharma recommended during Chaitra Mass include bathing in holy rivers and doing Anna Daana (donating food) to the needy. The month of Chaitra is auspicious for carrying out the Upanayana Sanskar, or holy thread rite. This sanskar is essential for Brahmin boys to begin studying Veda. Additionally, this month is highly auspicious for reading the Ramayana and Shrimad Bhagavad Gita.
