While it would be difficult to directly attribute individual medal misses to these issues, the experiences of PV Sindhu and Manu Bhaker have highlighted the physical and logistical demands placed on Indian athletes in Japan.

PV Sindhu’s Schedule Raises Questions Over Recovery
PV Sindhu’s Asian Games campaign ended in the quarterfinals after she lost 21-11, 18-21, 10-21 to China’s Chen Yufei. The two-time Olympic medallist later revealed that her demanding schedule had taken a toll.
Sindhu said she played three matches within 18 hours, returned to her room at around 3 am and was back on court at 8:30 am.
“Three matches in 18 hours. Back at 3 am, out again at 8:30 am. It took a toll,” Sindhu wrote on X.
Despite the disappointment, Sindhu said she would work on the shortcomings that emerged under pressure and stressed that one result would not define her journey.
Her comments have added to the discussion around recovery time and scheduling at the Games.
Manu Bhaker’s Father Questions Shooting Facilities And Travel
Manu Bhaker, one of India’s biggest medal hopes, finished her Asian Games campaign without a medal. Her father, Ram Kishan Bhaker, subsequently raised concerns about the shooting venue, transportation and scheduling.
Speaking to ANI, he questioned the distance between the shooting range and Nagoya and claimed athletes were spending four to five hours travelling every day.
“You can smell this gutter is here, and athletes are shooting in such an environment,” he said, while also criticising the bus timings and travel arrangements.
Manu finished 11th in the women’s 25m pistol qualification and fifth alongside Esha Singh and Rahi Sarnobat in the team final. She had also missed the 10m air pistol individual final.
Did Facilities And Travel Woes Affect India’s Medal Hopes?
India’s athletes have delivered medals across multiple disciplines in Aichi-Nagoya, but the experiences of Sindhu and Bhaker underline challenges that can affect preparation and recovery.
However, there is no clear evidence that these logistical issues directly caused their medal-less campaigns. Sindhu herself focused on the demanding schedule, while Bhaker’s father attributed the shooting team’s result primarily to competition factors.
The broader question for India is whether major multi-sport events can provide athletes with optimal conditions for training, recovery, nutrition and travel, particularly when marginal differences can decide medals.
