Paris 2024 proclaims the Phryges mission is to “lead a revolution in sport.”

The significance of Phryges

Phryges is a symbol of revolution, the French Republic and freedom, and the cap can be seen on French national icon Marianne, depicted in busts at town halls across the country and on stamps.

It can also be seen covered in the national curriculum in schools.

The Phryges follow a long lineage, as the Phrygian cap was part of all the major events in French history.

The French National Archives are believed to have the records of Phrygian caps worn during the construction of Paris’ Notre-Dame cathedral in 1163, during the Revolution of 1789, during work to build the Eiffel Tower, and during the Paris 1924 Olympic Games.

“Rather than an animal, our mascots represent an ideal,” Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet had said in a statement at the time. “Since it is familiar to us and appears on our stamps and the pediments of our town halls, it also represents French identity and spirit.”

Olympic Phryge is a tactician with a calculating and mathematical brain. Its methodical mind and alluring charm are sure to inspire people to become part of the sport in some way or the other.

Paralympic Phryge seems spontaneous and full of energy and enthusiasm. It has a prosthesis and a racing blade, which depicts it as a role model and gives maximum visibility to people with disabilities.
