Safer Internet Day 2024: Popular dating app Bumble has announced its 'Deception Detector' AI feature for users in India on Safer Internet Day. The feature aims to curb spam, scam and fake profiles and take action on them even before a user gets to know about their existence on the platform. According to Bumble stats, the tool helped shrink such accounts on the platform by 45 per cent.
The update comes on the heels of a Bumble research that revealed the risk of scams and fake accounts are among the top concerns of users in online dating. In India, respondents cited keeping personal data safe and online scams among the top concerns when dating people on social media. With Deception Detector, Bumble will use a machine learning model to evaluate the authenticity of a profile or connection on Bumble.
It will help "ensure that connections made on the app are genuine," said Lidiane Jones, CEO at Bumble. Out of the identified spam/scam accounts, the AI tool managed to block 95 per cent of them automatically. The tool is also aided by a dedicated human support team for added protection.

"With a dedicated focus on women's experience online, we recognise that in the AI era, trust is more paramount than ever. We are being thoughtful about how to best use new models to reduce the anxiety of making connections and support our community, with AI standing as a main area of focus," Jones said. The feature is now live across Bumble, Badoo, and Bumble For Friends.
Speaking of some facts, in February 2023, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported that romance scams cost victims $1.3 billion in 2022, with a median loss of $4,400. Such scammers notice minute details to churn out as your perfect match. However, they are reluctant to meet offline. About 40 per cent of victims of such scams said they found the scammer on social media.

On a related note, the company introduced AI features such as Private Detector in the past to identify explicit images. Plus, Best Bees (for a "higher level of curation for members") and AI-powered conversation starters in Bumble For Friends are among other initiatives of the platform.
