If you use WhatsApp, there’s one simple reality to keep in mind: anyone who has your phone number can call you on the app. That includes people you’ve never spoken to before, haven’t saved as a contact, or don’t even recognise. While that openness can be useful at times, it also means spam calls, wrong numbers, and the occasional scam attempt can break your focus without warning.
To deal with this, WhatsApp offers a feature called Silence Unknown Callers. It does exactly what the name suggests, calls from numbers that aren’t in your contacts won’t ring on your phone. Instead of being interrupted, you get peace and control, without completely cutting off communication.
The biggest advantage here is fewer distractions. Unknown calls won’t buzz your phone in the middle of work, meetings, or downtime. At the same time, WhatsApp doesn’t erase these calls. They still appear in your call history, so if you later realise the call was important, you can return it when it suits you.
There’s also a privacy angle. Silencing unknown callers adds a buffer between you and people you don’t know, making it harder for spam or scam callers to get your attention instantly. It ensures that only people you’ve chosen to save as contacts can reach you directly in real time.
How To Turn It On?
Turning this feature on is straightforward. On Android, open WhatsApp, tap the three-dot menu in the top-right corner, head into Settings, then Privacy. Scroll down until you see Calls, and switch on Silence Unknown Callers. On iPhone, the steps are just as simple. Open WhatsApp, tap Settings at the bottom, go to Privacy, then Calls, and enable Silence Unknown Callers from there.
Once activated, calls from unknown numbers won’t ring, but you’ll still see them listed in the Calls tab and in notifications. You can tap into these logs to call someone back if needed, or open the silenced caller message inside a chat.

One thing to remember is that if you call or message a silenced number, WhatsApp won’t treat them as unknown anymore. Their future calls won’t be silenced. And if there’s a number you never want to hear from again, blocking that contact remains an option.
It’s a small setting, but it can make a noticeable difference to how calm and controlled your WhatsApp experience feels.
