WhatsApp, a popular instant messaging application, tests new features in beta builds. In the latest move, the company is working on a username feature with PIN support on iOS, according to WABetaInfo. The feature earlier spotted in the works on Android. With the move, WhatsApp may aim to expand its functionalities across more smartphone users. The feature was spotted in the iOS beta "24.18.10.70" version.

According to the report, the feature is "under development" and is not rolling out to beta testers enrolled in the TestFlight program. However, you must keep your WhatsApp beta for iPhone app updated to receive the feature once it starts rolling out. For context, a username can act as a possible alternative to chat with others while keeping the mobile number private.

In future, iPhone users may get username support to chat with people via usernames. This option may also get PIN integration for added enhancement. This feature can make conversations more secure and private while enhancing the privacy of a user. Plus, iOS users may also get the option to choose from which medium they wish to chat: username or phone number.

The username PIN feature will allow people who have the correct PIN to reach out to you for the first time. This will act as a gatekeeper to control who can reach out to you using your username. Users may also get the option to change or delete username PIN. This will allow you to limit interactions with others who may have reached out via an older PIN.

A username PIN should not have private or sensitive details, such as verification codes, WABetaInfo noted. This feature will be optional and if you do not configure the feature, the username will be accessible to people who may know it. These users can start chats without any verification. However, a PIN will limit chats from new users while ensuring contacts and ongoing conversations remain unaffected.
