United States (US) Vice President Kamala Harris hit back at Republican presidential candidate Kamala Harris after the latter questioned her racial identity on Wednesday. Without naming Trump, Harris said that the American people deserved better, adding that the former American president had put on the “same old show” of “divisiveness and disrespect.” She also emphasised that Trump’s vision and campaign aim to take the country "backwards."

“The American people deserve a leader who tells the truth, a leader who does not respond with hostility and anger when confronted with the facts. We deserve a leader who understands that our differences do not divide us — they are an essential source of our strength,” Harris said.

Talking about the two different visions for America, Harris said, “As we work to move our nation forward...there are those who are trying to take us backwards. You might have seen their agenda, they call it Project 2025 and it is a 900-page agenda of extremism.”

Harris’s remarks came after Trump claimed that Harris, after being of "Indian heritage" for years, "turned black" a few years ago. “So I don't know, is she Indian or is she Black? But you know what, I respect either one, but she obviously doesn't, because she was Indian all the way, and then all of a sudden she made a turn, and she went - she became a Black person," Trump earlier said in an interview.

The White House also condemned Trump’s remark. Kamla Harris is of Indian origin. Her mother was Indian and her father was Jamaican, both immigrated to the United States. She was born in California to Shyama Gopalan, a Tamil biologist and Jamaican-American father, Donald J Harris, who was a professor.

Kamala’s selection as Vice President in 2020 was a landmark achievement, making her the first woman, the first African American, and the first Asian American to hold the office.
