A Reddit post by an Indian couple living in the United States has sparked debate online about choosing between family responsibilities and career stability. This comes amid stricter immigration rules under the Trump administration. The couple, both working in the US on H-1B visas, said they are unsure whether to travel to India after the wife’s mother was diagnosed with advanced-stage cancer. They fear visa delays can affect their return to the US and risk their jobs.
Indian Couple Faces Tough Decision
According to the post, the couple would need visa stamping if they travel outside the country. The husband explained that they urgently need to visit India because his mother-in-law is critically ill. However, he is unsure whether both should go or only his wife should travel, as their return to the US could be delayed due to long visa appointment wait times.
Why They Fear Losing Jobs?
He also shared that staying away from work for too long could lead to job loss. At the same time, he said the family has built a life in the US, including a home and two children, making the decision even more complicated. “Unable to decide if only my spouse should travel and I should stay here in US or we both should travel,” he wrote.
He emphasised that due to visa uncertainty, both he and his wife could risk losing their jobs if there is a long delay in returning to the US. Notably, H-1B visa holders who leave the country must obtain a valid visa stamp from a US embassy or consulate before re-entering. However, under the Trump administration’s stricter immigration rules, additional screening measures have led to significant delays in getting visa appointments.
“Due to visa uncertainty we both might lose our jobs if there is too much delay in coming back to US,” the post added. As the post went viral, users responded with messages of sympathy and advice. One user warned that there is a risk of not being able to return to the US under current visa conditions. Another suggested that both should travel together. While the post has emerged online, The Daily Jagran could not independently verify the authenticity of the claims.
Meanwhile, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Saturday maintained that recent changes to the H-1B visa programme should not be seen as being aimed specifically at India. “I don’t think the big item to remember on that is, this is not targeted at India. The United States had to take stock of the whole immigration system, every kind of visa. Unfortunately, under previous administrations, our borders were wide open. That’s something the President wanted to fix on day one,” he said.
