Los Angeles Wildfire: At least five people were reported dead, while hundreds of houses were destroyed after five separate fires burned in Los Angeles County. The horrific incident forced many celebrities to leave their homes and flee. Not only this, but the wildfire disrupted several Hollywood events just as the annual awards season was kicking off.

This weekend's Critics Choice Awards was delayed by two weeks, and next week's Oscar nominations announcement was postponed by two days, organisers said. Strong winds obstructed firefighting efforts and intensified the fires, allowing them to spread uncontrollably since their onset on Tuesday.

Oscar winner Curtis said she was safe but "my community and possibly my home is on fire." "It is a terrifying situation," Curtis wrote on Instagram. "Pray if you believe in it and even if you don't, pray for those who do."

On the west side, the Palisades Fire consumed 15,832 acres (6,406 hectares) and 1,000 structures in the hills between Santa Monica and Malibu, racing down Topanga Canyon until reaching the natural fire break of the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday. It was already one of the most destructive fires in Los Angeles history.

To the east, in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, the Eaton Fire destroyed an additional 10,600 acres (4,289 hectares) and resulted in the deaths of at least five individuals, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna, who spoke to KNX radio. Initial damage and economic losses were estimated by private forecaster AccuWeather to exceed USD 50 billion.

Stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Mark Hamill, Mandy Moore and James Budds were among those forced to flee the blaze. Palisades Drive was jammed with vehicles abandoned by people in their rush to get to safety and cars were bulldozed to make way for emergency vehicles. Will Adams, a Palisades resident for 56 years, said he had never seen anything like it in his time there. He watched the sky turn gray and then black as homes burned.

Officials said evacuation orders were issued for about 70,000 residents and more than 13,000 buildings were at risk. Governor Gavin Newsam visited the scene and said many houses were burned. He declared a state of emergency there. Most of the injured are those who defied evacuation orders.
