Nepal Floods: A fresh disaster threat has emerged in Nepal after a massive landslide partially blocked the Chaulani River in the Api Himal region of Darchula district on Friday. The landslide has restricted the flow of the river and created a temporary natural dam, raising fears that the trapped water could suddenly burst through and cause a flash flood downstream.

Massive Landslide Blocks Chaulani River

In view of the situation, authorities have warned people living near the river to remain alert and move to safer areas if necessary. According to local media reports, continuous rainfall triggered a huge landslide in the Api Himal area, sending large amounts of mud, rocks and debris into the river and partially blocking its course. A video of the landslide has also emerged online, showing a huge mass of black mud, rocks and debris rushing down the mountain slope from a great height before crashing into the area below.

Authorities Warn Residents

The water has started finding its way through again, but continued landslides have kept the risk of sudden flooding high. Around 30 residents living in nearby areas have reportedly been moved to safer locations. People living along riverbanks have been asked to stay alert and take necessary precautions. Meanwhile, Sudurpaschim Chief Minister Khagraj Bhatta has instructed local authorities and security agencies to remain on high alert and prepare for any emergency.

River Flow Currently Normal

The Armed Police Force said the Chaulani River was currently flowing at a normal level. However, security personnel from the Nepal Chameliya Hydropower Security Base in Balanch have been deployed to monitor the river.

Nepal Floods Death Toll

The latest warning comes as Nepal is still dealing with the aftermath of the devastating Trishuli River disaster. The death toll from flash floods has risen to 1,344 on Saturday as more bodies were recovered from the affected areas while thousands remain missing.
