Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah on Thursday urged the Gen Z protesters who rocked Nepal to remain "calm" and "not panic" till the next government forms after fresh elections. The remarks come as the Gen Z protesters have nearly finalised the decision to back former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as the country’s interim leader.
Nepal plunged deeper into political turmoil this week as massive youth-led protests forced Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign, sparking violence, arson, and widespread unrest across the country. The students-driven Gen Z movement, which initially began as a response to a government ban on social media, has grown into a nationwide uprising against corruption, political stagnation, and alleged apathy by the ruling elite.
Balen Shah Describes Current Situation In Nepal As 'Unprecedented'
"My request to dear Gen Z and all Nepalis is that the country is going through an unprecedented situation at this time. You are now stepping towards a golden future. Please do not panic at this time; be patient. Now the country is going to get an interim government, which will conduct new elections in the country. The job of this interim government is to conduct elections and give a new mandate to the country," Balendra Shah wrote in a Facebook post.
Balen Shah stated that he "fully" supports the proposal for former Chief Justice Sushila Karki to lead the interim government in Nepal.
"I fully support your proposal to hand over the leadership of this interim/electoral government to former Chief Justice Sushila Karki (Nepal New PM Sushila Karki). I wholeheartedly respect your understanding, wisdom and unity. This shows how mature you are," Balen Shah further wrote.
“I would like to say to my friends who are in a hurry to take over the leadership at this time that the country needs your passion, your thinking and your honesty permanently, not temporarily. For this, there will be elections. Please do not rush. Honorable President, to protect the historic revolution brought about by Gen Z, an interim government must be formed and the Parliament must be dissolved immediately,” Balendra Shah said.
Why Did Balen Shah Not Accept The PM's Post?
-Balen Shah has indirectly revealed in the Facebook post why he declined the offer to become the Prime Minister. The primary responsibility of Sushil Karki's interim government will be to conduct elections at the earliest and maintain peace and stability in the country until then.
-Balen Shah appears to be focused on winning the elections through public support, which would strengthen his position and influence in the long run.
