Ukraine is taking a major step toward developing robots to undertake dangerous missions and save lives. Former Ukrainian Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov on Saturday announced the launch of the "Army of Robots".

"The goal is simple — save lives. Robots should take on the most dangerous missions: evacuating the wounded, delivering ammunition, mining and demining, reconnaissance, defending positions and engaging targets," Fedorov said in a post on X.

Fedorov further emphasised that the Army of Robots is an ecosystem rather than a single company. Under the initiative, Ukraine plans to invest in defence-tech firms, launch its own technology projects, expand R&D capabilities, conduct testing with the military, and scale up technologies that prove effective on the battlefield.

"The Army of Robots is not one company. It’s an ecosystem. We will invest in defence tech companies, launch our own technology projects, test them with the military and scale what works on the battlefield," Fedorov added.

In the same X post, Fedorov called on defence-tech companies and engineers working on robotic technologies to join the initiative, while also seeking a CTO or tech lead for the Army of Robots.

Building On "Army Of Drones" Success

The initiative builds on Ukraine's experience with its "Army of Drones" program, which was launched in 2022 to scale unmanned systems. Fedorov emphasised that the next technological breakthrough Ukraine is pursuing is the robotisation of warfare.

"In 2022, we launched the Army of Drones. Today, drones account for over 95% of battlefield strikes, and Ukraine has more than 700 UAV manufacturers. Now we need the next technological breakthrough: the robotisation of warfare," Fedorov stated.

Russia And Ukraine Exchange Deadly Strikes

The announcement comes as the Russia-Ukraine war continues in its fifth year, with both sides exchanging strikes.

On Sunday, Ukrainian officials said that overnight Russian strikes killed at least two people, with attacks on Kyiv and its suburbs damaging more than 16 sites, including residential and industrial facilities. Moscow's Defence Ministry stated its forces targeted logistics centres, port and transport infrastructure, communications facilities, and vessels linked to the Ukrainian military.

Meanwhile, Russian authorities said a Ukrainian drone attack on Saturday killed three people. The strikes targeted industrial sites, including an oil refinery, according to Russian media reports cited by Al Jazeera.
