Saudi Arabia has appointed Sheikh Saleh bin Awad Al-Maghamsi as the Imam of one of Islam’s most sacred sites, the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah. Maghamsi began his service by leading the Isha prayer at Masjid an-Nabawi on February 21. With decades of experience in Islamic teaching and Quran interpretation, Maghamsi will now lead prayers for millions of worshipers every year as he reaches the most respected position of Imam.

Who Is Sheikh Saleh Al-Maghamsi

Born in November 1963, Sheikh Saleh Al-Maghamsi was raised in a scholarly environment, which sparked his interest in Islamic studies from a young age. With time, Maghamsi gained extensive knowledge of Quranic exegesis, which is popularly known as tafsir in the Islamic context, specialising in the subject. Over the years, Maghamsi established himself as one of Saudi Arabia’s contemporary scholars.

Besides learning the Arabic language and Islamic sciences at the King Abdul Aziz University, Maghamsi received religious training under several known and prominent scholars of the time, including Sheikh Ibn Baaz, Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen, Sheikh Abu Bakr Al-Jazairi and Sheikh Mohammed Attia Salem. All these learnings and trainings shaped him into a great scholar, providing an extraordinary teaching approach.

Sheikh Al-Maghamsi is known for his calm, composed articulation style while teaching the Quran. Maghami is known for his extraordinary way of linking the religious text to contemporary issues, ensuring that it remains faithful to the traditional scholarship.

His subjects of lectures include moderation, balance, incorporation of the Islamic values in daily life, Quran interpretation, Islamic history, fiqh and the Prophet’s biography. He has earned wide recognition inside and outside Saudi Arabia, addressing these subjects through televised programmes and lectures.

How Significant Is Sheikh Al-Maghamsi’s Appointment

Prophet’s mosque or Masjid an-Nabawi is among the most sacred sites for billions of Muslims around the world, attracting millions of worshippers every year, particularly during Hajj and Umrah. This appointment places Maghami in an exclusive list of imams at Masjid an-Nabawi, as part of a group of people who are entrusted with leading prayers at a religious site where many fine scholars are expected.

Sheikh Al-Maghami expressed his gratitude to the Saudi leadership for placing their trust in him, through an X post. He thanked the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz, and to Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Salman, asking Allah to grant success in fulfilling the responsibility.
