US President Donald Trump has said Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to visit the White House toward the end of this year, days after the two leaders held a phone call. While Trump did not mention the visit in his social media post following the call, he stressed that Washington and Beijing share a “very good relationship.” China has not yet officially confirmed the proposed visit.

Interview Reveals Travel Plans

In an interview with NBC News recorded on Wednesday, Trump said Xi would travel to the US later this year, calling the US and China the world’s two most powerful nations. Xi last visited the United States in 2023. Trump, meanwhile, is slated to travel to China in April, ahead of Xi’s anticipated return visit to Washington.

Trade Tensions and Tariff Truce

Since returning to office a year ago, Trump has rolled out a series of tariffs, including sector-specific duties on steel, automobiles, and other goods, as part of broader policy goals. While the US and China clashed over trade, both sides reached a general ceasefire after tensions spiked last spring. Despite US efforts to reduce reliance on Chinese manufacturing, economic ties between the two countries remain strong.

Is A New World Order Taking Shape?

The latest phone call between the two economic rivals has sparked fresh speculation about a reset between the world's two largest economies following years of trade tensions, tech rivalry and geopolitical rivalry. Analysts say renewed high-level engagement could ease global market nervousness but reduce strategic mistrust. However, others caution that symbolism alone may not resolve deep differences, raising a bigger question: is this a tactical diplomatic pause, or the early signal of a new global order taking shape? The answer is not very straight, given the "unpredictable" nature of Trump.

Trump Calls Phone Conversation ‘Excellent’

Trump described the call with Xi as “excellent,” noting that both leaders recognise the importance of maintaining stable ties. He said the discussion was extensive and covered a range of global issues.

Nuclear Talks Proposal and China’s Response

Separately, the US on Friday proposed trilateral talks with Russia and China to establish new limits on nuclear weapons. Beijing, however, has declined to join such disarmament negotiations for now.

The two leaders spoke by phone on Wednesday afternoon (February 4). Xi reiterated his caution on Taiwan, while Trump confirmed his planned visit to China in April 2026. Trade discussions included China’s commitments to buy US soybeans, oil, and gas, along with heavy machinery such as aircraft engines. The leaders also exchanged views on the Russia–Ukraine conflict and the situation in Iran. Xi urged both sides to pursue mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and mutually beneficial cooperation, warning that even small missteps could harm ties.
