Bajaj Auto, a popular two-wheeler manufacturer in India, recently teased a new, more budget-friendly variant of its popular Chetak electric scooter. This new variant is expected to hit the market in May, showcasing several changes aimed at making it more affordable while retaining key features. Ahead of the official launch, the scooter has been spotted, revealing some key details.

According to a report by Autocar, while the basic design remains unchanged, Bajaj has made tweaks to reduce costs. The new variant sports steel wheels paired with drum brakes, a departure from the alloy wheels and disc brakes found in current models. Additionally, it opts for a traditional physical key slot instead of the previous keyless entry system, contributing to cost savings.
In terms of features, this new scooter will now be equipped with the monochrome LCD display instead of the coloured one. It also replaces the lockable glove box with dual open cubbies, further cutting down on costs.
Details about changes to the powertrain have not yet been disclosed. However, it's speculated that this variant may sacrifice a bit of performance to enhance range. Notably, it lacks a hub motor, raising questions about its overall performance capabilities. It's likely to retain the 2.9kWh battery pack from the Chetak Urbane, offering an estimated range of 113 km under Indian Driving Cycle conditions.
Currently, the Bajaj Chetak is available in two variants – Premium and Urbane. The Premium variant is equipped with a 3.2kWh battery boasting a range of 126 km. It is available at a price of Rs 1.47 lakh (ex-showroom). On the other hand, the Urbane variant is priced at Rs 1.23 lakh (ex-showroom), offers similar features but with a slightly lower range. It's anticipated that the new variant will be priced below the Urbane model, making it a more accessible option for budget-conscious buyers.
