IPL 2026: Mumbai Indians may undergo a major shakeup as Hardik Pandya faces likely removal as skipper. According to the Indian Express, the star all-rounder aims to sever ties with the Mumbai-based franchise after his relationship with the team management soured. MI, having clinched just four wins in 14 games this year, also seeks to move on from Hardik, whom they appointed captain before IPL 2024. But the question persists: who will seize the captaincy?
According to the report, Rohit Sharma will select the next team captain. The team management learned from their decision to swap Rohit for Hardik during IPL 2023. Determined not to repeat that blunder, the management will now enlist Rohit, one of the team's biggest players, to play a decisive role in determining the new skipper.
Yet, for all the longing among fans, it’s clear that Rohit himself will not don the captain’s mantle again, adding a bittersweet note to the unfolding drama.

"The next Mumbai Indians captain will be the one who has the blessings of Rohit Sharma. Mumbai realizes the mistake they have made. But it will not be Rohit himself," a source was quoted as saying to the Indian Express. According to the report, the MI management is hesitating over their plans for Hardik, who may face dismissal from the team due to a ruptured relationship with the team's management.
"Hardik will seek a transfer. For him, the pain goes beyond captaincy. When trust with management breaks down, it’s not just a job at stake—it’s belief, belonging, and pride," the source said, revealing the deeply personal cost of this professional rift.
The source was also asked whether the Mumbai-based franchise should have approached Ashish Nehra, the coach of the Gujarat Titans, from whom they had traded Hardik, and the source revealed that getting players or coaches directly from another team isn't that easy.

"But this is the reality of IPL. No franchise can poach a coach or a captain from another franchise. Why would Ashish Nehra come?" the source concluded.
For now, a cloud of suspense lingers over Mumbai Indians fans, who anxiously await news of Hardik Pandya's fate. This revelation promises to shape not just the team, but the spirit of this storied franchise in the weeks ahead.
