At a recent event, star Indian batter Rohit Sharma gave a priceless reaction when International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman Jay Shah affectionately referred to him as "Indian captain", a title he had relinquished to Shubman Gill ahead of the Australia tour in October 2025.
Despite being replaced as ODI skipper, Rohit's leadership legacy remains unblemished, with two glorious ICC titles under his belt - the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the Champions Trophy in 2025.
Rohit had already drawn curtains on his T20I and Test careers, with Suryakumar Yadav taking the charge of the shortest-ball format of cricket and Gill being handed the leadership of red-ball and ODI forms.
ICC Chairman Jay Shah recently referred to Rohit as the Indian captain, earning a radiant smile from the veteran opener.

“Our captain is sitting here. I will call him captain only, as he has led the team to two ICC trophies. During the 2023 World Cup, after winning ten successive matches, we could only win hearts but couldn’t lift the trophy. In February 2024, I had said in Rajkot that in the next World Cup, we will win both hearts and the cup,” Shah said at the United in Triumph event.
The 38-year-old's tenure as India's full-time ODI skipper, which began in December 2021, spanned 56 matches. Rohit boosts a towering figure in T20I leadership with an impressive tally of 49 wins in 62 matches, making him the most successful captain in the format's history.
His remarkable winning percentage is 79.03%, a record that stands tall among captains with a minimum of 53 matches in charge.
