Shubman Gill carried his strong form from IPL 2026 into Test cricket, scoring his 11th Test hundred in the one-off match against Afghanistan.

The India captain played a composed and controlled innings in front of his home crowd. He reached the milestone off 138 balls, hitting 11 fours and a six, and never really looked under pressure.

It was also an historic milestone in his captaincy career, as it became his sixth Test hundred as India captain. With this, he moved further up the list of Indian captains with the most Test centuries.

Only Virat Kohli (20), Sunil Gavaskar (11), Mohammad Azharuddin (9), and Sachin Tendulkar (7) have more Test hundreds as India captain. Gill’s six centuries as skipper show how quickly he has settled into the role with both bat and leadership.

Gill looked in control from the start. While other batters got starts, he made his innings count, building it patiently and putting away loose balls with ease.

He brought up his hundred with a simple single off Saleem Safi, guiding the ball to the leg side. As soon as he reached the milestone, the crowd stood up to applaud him. Gill acknowledged it by lifting his bat, while teammates in the dressing room and Rishabh Pant also came forward to congratulate him.

The hundred added to what has already been a strong year for him. After a brilliant IPL 2026 season, where he scored 732 runs in 16 matches for Gujarat Titans at an average of 45.75 and a strike rate of 163.02, he carried that confidence into red-ball cricket as well.

Gill’s innings also showed his growing maturity in Test cricket. He played with patience, chose his shots carefully, and mixed elegant drives with solid defence, proving once again that his white-ball form is translating well into the longer format.
