Around nine players from the Indian team that won the men's cricket gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games are likely to be part of a 30-member probable squad for this year's event, which will take place in September.
According to a report by Amar Ujala, the BCCI has already shared the list of probable players with the organisers of the 2026 Asian Games. A final squad of 15 players will be selected from this group. The men's cricket tournament is scheduled from September 24 to October 3.
Some of the biggest names in the list include young batting talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who is only 15 years old, and experienced batter Shreyas Iyer. However, India's T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav is reportedly not among the probables.
Ruturaj Gaikwad, who led India to the gold medal at the previous Asian Games, has also been included. Interestingly, he has not played a T20 International since India's Zimbabwe tour in July 2024.
VVS Laxman Likely to Coach the Team
The Asian Games cricket tournament will be played at the same time as India's three-match ODI series against the West Indies at home. Since head coach Gautam Gambhir is expected to be busy with the ODI team, he is unlikely to travel to Japan for the Asian Games.
Instead, former India batter VVS Laxman is expected to take charge of the squad for the tournament.
Sooryavanshi Continues to Impress
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi had an incredible IPL season in his first full campaign. He scored 776 runs in 16 innings and maintained an impressive strike rate of 237.31.

The teenage batter also broke a major IPL record. He hit 72 sixes during the season, surpassing the previous record of 59 sixes set by Chris Gayle in 2012.
Sooryavanshi's performances have attracted plenty of attention, and many fans and former cricketers believe he is ready for an India call-up despite his young age.
Before the Asian Games begin, India are scheduled to play a two-match T20I series against Ireland, followed by a five-match T20I series in England.
