Virat Kohli is all set to return to international cricket in the first ODI against England after missing India’s home series against Afghanistan last month. The former India captain has recovered from the hamstring injury he suffered during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 final and will be eager to make an impact at Edgbaston in Birmingham.
Apart from marking his comeback, Kohli also has a chance to achieve another major milestone in the India-England ODI rivalry.
The star batter needs just 59 more runs to move past Sachin Tendulkar on the list of highest run-scorers in India-England ODIs. Tendulkar is currently third with 1,455 runs in 37 matches at an average of 44.09, including two centuries and 10 half-centuries.
Kohli is close behind with 1,397 runs in 38 innings. He has scored three centuries and 10 fifties against England in ODIs while averaging 41.08.
Kohli can also challenge Dhoni’s record
If Kohli enjoys a big series, he could climb even higher on the list. Former India captain MS Dhoni currently tops the chart with 1,546 runs in 44 innings. Dhoni averaged 46.84 against England and registered one century along with 10 fifties.
Yuvraj Singh occupies the second spot with 1,526 runs from 36 innings at an average of 50.76. He struck four centuries and seven half-centuries against England, while his strike rate of 101.60 is the second-best among batters with more than 1,000 runs in India-England ODIs, behind only Virender Sehwag.
To overtake both Dhoni and Yuvraj, Kohli will need 150 runs across the three-match ODI series.
Kohli’s ODI numbers in England
Kohli has enjoyed decent success against England on their home soil. In 16 ODI innings in England against the hosts, he has scored 581 runs at an average of 38.73, including one century and four fifties.
His overall ODI record in England is even more impressive. Across 33 innings, including matches in ICC tournaments, Kohli has amassed 1,349 runs at an average of 51.88. During that period, he has hit one century and 12 half-centuries.
Strong memories in Birmingham
Kohli has also produced some memorable knocks at Edgbaston over the years. His last appearance at the venue came during the 2019 ODI World Cup, when he scored 26 against Bangladesh. Earlier in the same tournament, he made 66 against England.
In the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy, Kohli played two important unbeaten innings at Edgbaston. He remained not out on 81 against Pakistan before following it up with an unbeaten 96 against Bangladesh, helping India reach the final.
