Delhi Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood announced on Wednesday that the BJP government will inaugurate 100 Atal Canteens across the city on the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, providing meals at just Rs 5. The initiative, promised in the BJP’s Delhi election manifesto, aims to offer affordable and nutritious food to residents.
The canteens will begin operations on Thursday, December 25. Some delays occurred due to GRAP restrictions, but food service will now commence at all centres.
The Delhi budget for 2025-26 has allocated Rs 100 crore for the project. Each canteen will serve 500 people in the morning and 500 in the evening, offering a menu of lentils with rice, vegetable curry, and roti.
Modern facilities, including CCTV surveillance, LPG-based cooking systems, RO water, and cold storage,e will be installed at all locations, with monitoring done through the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board’s digital platform.
