Neet UG 2024 Revised Merit List: The National Testing Agency (NTA) will declare the revised National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2024 results soon. The revised results will be announced after considering the correct option for a physics question. The Supreme Court dismissed pleas seeking the cancellation and re-test of NEET UG 2024, which faced several controversies. Candidates will be able to check the revised NEET UG 2024 results at exams.nta.ac.in/NEET/.
In the NEET UG 2024 examination, the Physics section featured a question that caused confusion among many students. The question involved two statements about atoms:
1. Atoms are electrically neutral as they contain an equal number of positive and negative charges.
2. Atoms of each element are stable and emit their characteristic spectrum.
Students had to choose the most appropriate answer from the combinations below:
(1) Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct.
2) Both Statement I and Statement II are correct.
(3) Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect.
(4) Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect.
According to the media reports, over 4 lakh students selected option 2 based on the older NCERT textbook, while more than 9 lakh chose option 4 based on the latest NCERT textbook. Initially, the NTA treated both options 2 and 4 as correct answers for the physics question and awarded four marks to examinees who selected either option.
However, petitioners argued that the NTA could not mark both answers as correct, given that NEET instructions specified candidates should follow the latest NCERT edition. This discrepancy resulted in the NTA granting grace marks for the contested Physics question, which led to 44 students achieving a perfect score.
In response, the Chief Justice of India (CJI) noted that by awarding grace marks, the NTA contradicted its own rules. However, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, defending the NTA’s decision, argued that many students might have relied on older textbooks borrowed from siblings.
To clarify the issue surrounding the physics question, the Supreme Court assigned the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi with resolving the NEET UG 2024 physics question. During the July 22 hearing, the court directed the director of IIT Delhi to assign three top professors to resolve the question within 24 hours.

During the hearing on July 23, the Chief Justice of India announced that, following initial confusion where both options 2 and 4 were considered correct, IIT Delhi’s expert committee has determined that option 4 is the correct answer. This decision resolves the ambiguity, confirming option 4 as the definitive answer to the questioned item.
Candidates whose answers align with the one provided by the three-panel experts will be awarded four marks, while those who selected the other option will lose five marks. This adjustment will result in a reshuffle among over four lakh NEET UG aspirants, according to news agency PTI reports.
The NTA is expected to announce the revised merit list based on the Supreme Court's decision. This update will impact approximately 4 lakh students, including 44 who achieved a perfect score of 720, according to a media report.
