About Pongal Festival:
Pongal is a harvest festival celebrated by the Tamil community. Spanning over four days, the festival is observed by showing gratitude to the Sun, Mother Nature, and the various farm animals that help contribute to a bountiful harvest.
It is observed predominantly across Tamil Nadu and also among the Tamil communities in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka. Pongal also marks the commencement of the pious Tamil month 'Thai,' falling on the 14th or 15th of January each year.
Tamil Nadu School Holiday On Pongal Festival:
On this occasion, educational institutions in some southern states, including Tamil Nadu, remain closed. This year, Tamil Nadu schools will remain shut on January 15, 16, and 17, 2026.

Over 11 Lakh Depart Chennai For Pongal:
According to IANS reports, ahead of Pongal, approximately 1.1 million people left Chennai over the weekend for various parts of Tamil Nadu and neighboring states. This led to a massive surge in demand for public transport and caused heavy traffic jams on the highways.
Railway sources said that more than 700,000 passengers traveled by train in the last two days. To meet the demand, additional special trains were operated to Tirunelveli, Nagercoil, Tiruchi, and other major destinations.
