Gong Yoo shared his reasons during a press conference for Goblin, a drama also written by Descendants of the Sun writer Kim Eun Sook. He explained that the physical demands of filming a drama are very different from those of a film. Dramas are often shot in a shorter time frame and under significant pressure, which can impact an actor's performance. Gong Yoo wanted to ensure he was always at his best and felt he couldn’t do that under such constraints.

After Gong Yoo’s decision, other A-list actors like Won Bin and Jo In Sung were approached, but they also declined due to scheduling conflicts or other reasons. Eventually, Song Joong Ki accepted the role of Yoo Shi Jin, which skyrocketed his popularity globally. It’s now hard to imagine anyone else in that role.

Although Gong Yoo and Song Hye Kyo didn’t get to work together in Descendants of the Sun, fans will see them together in the upcoming drama Show Business. This highly anticipated project has fans excited to see these two stars share the screen.

Gong Yoo began his career as a video jockey in 2000 and debuted as an actor in 2001 with the drama School 4. His first movie appearance was in My Tutor Friend (2003). Over the years, he has starred in several hit dramas and films, including Coffee Prince, Train to Busan, Squid Game and Kim Ji Young: Born 1982.

He is also set to lead the mystery thriller The Trunk alongside Seo Hyun Jin and will return for Squid Game Season 2.
