Ramayana, Nitesh Tiwari’s magical masterpiece, has been making headlines since the makers dropped the first look of the movie. The two-part saga is in the news for being the most expensive movie produced in India. Even the actors are being paid high fees as compared to any other project. Ranbir Kapoor, who will be seen as Lord Ram in the movie, has been reportedly paid Rs 75 crore for each part, making a total of Rs 150 crore in Ramayana Part 1 and 2. Sai Pallavi, who will be playing the role of Maa Sita, has allegedly been paid Rs 12 crore for her role, Rs 6 crore for each part.

Ramayana’s producer Namit Malhotra recently got candid on The Prakhar Gupta Xperience podcast and talked about the high-end budget of the movie. He explained that when all the production and marketing work for both parts is done, the budget will be around $500 million (over ₹4000 crore). The figure is seven times higher than any Indian production ever made, and twice what Dangal - the highest-grossing Indian film - earned at the box office.

He expressed, "When we set out to make it, 6-7 years ago, when we really got serious about mounting it, everybody called me a lunatic, because no Indian film comes close to it budgetwise. To put it simply, it will be about $500 million by the time we are done with both the films - Part 1 and Part 2, which is over ₹4000 crore."

Namit Malhotra’s big revelation stunned the Reddit users. The clip from the interview has garnered some comments from the shocked netizens. A user wrote, "This is bigger than the budget of Avatar lol." Another netizen pointed out, "They need to make some 800-900 million dollars box office to just break even. It will have to basically make an Avatar-level or an Avengers project money." Another user questioned the potential of the movie and said, "You could make up to 1.5-2 Avengers movies with it, but the question is whether it has the potential to reach $1 billion, both movies combined."

No Indian movie has ever crossed the mark of Rs 2000 crore at the box office. This fact raised some concerns as a Redditor wrote, "Isn't the highest grossing film like ₹2000 (crore) and that was Dangal. They want 2 times that? In this economy? Just to break even?" People also questioned the credibility of the numbers given, as one user highlighted, "Am I the only one who feels that these are inflated numbers? Last week, the director said that the combined budget is nearly ₹800-1000 crores for both movies. I think that they are just trying to create hype."

Nitesh Tiwari’s directorial is slated for a November 2026 release. And the second part is scheduled for 2027. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Yash as Ravana, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Ravi Dubey as Lakshman, and Sunny Deol as Hanuman.
