Filmmaker Karan Johar attended the 71st National Film Awards as his directorial venture Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, bagged the National Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. The movie marked Karan's return to direction after 7 years, and his comeback proved to be worthwhile as he earned one of the highest honours. He received the prestigious award from President Droupadi Murmu at Vigyan Bhawan in Delhi on Tuesday, September 23. The film garnered immense praise for its storyline, powerful performances and chartbuster songs.
After winning the National Award, Karan took to his Instagram handle and shared a heartfelt note expressing his feelings. He wrote, "So humbled and honoured to win the most POPULAR FILM PROVIDING WHOLESOME ENTERTAINMENT at the NATIONAL AWARDS @mib_india #71stnationalfilmawards. Apoorva @apoorva1972 and I are deeply grateful to our entire family @dharmamovies for being our soul and spine…."
As the day marked a special milestone not only for him but for his close friends Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji, he added, saying, "So emotional to win in the same year as Rani and Bhai @iamsrk (missed taking a photo with him)… thank you all for all the love to our film #rockyaurranikipremkahani and @ranveersingh and @aliaabhatt. I just have to say… Karan Johar this side and I am a fragile today… thanks to the love and recognition."

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani won two awards at the National Film Awards, including Best Choreography, awarded to Vaibhavi Merchant. This is not the first time Karan Johar has won a National Award. He previously received a Special Jury Award for Feature Film for Shershaah in 2021, and the Best Film in the AVGC category for Brahmastra: Part 1 Shiva in 2022.

Besides lead cast Alia and Ranveer, the movie also starred Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, and Shabana Azmi, Tota Roy Chowdhury, Churni Ganguly, Aamir Bashir, and Kshitee Jog in key roles. The film's musical score, composed by Pritam, added to its emotional depth and mass appeal. With romantic tracks, high energy dance numbers, and soulful melodies like Ve Kamleya, Tum Kya Mile, Kudmayi and others, the soundtrack played a important role in film's success.
