Netflix popular sci-fi show Stranger Things ended on an unsettling note. While some over-enjoyed the ending episode of the final season, others found it not to be worth the hype. The show's fans who were deeply connected with the series for the past nine years, expressed disappointment on social media. While the final episode was framed as a definitive farewell, it left the audience with more questions than answers, leading to intense debates over its actual meaning. So, the ending viewers witnessed was merely an illusion or a collective hallucination experienced by the characters?
A Secret Ninth Episode Of Stranger Things 5 On The Cards?
A central pillar of the fan theory is the belief that Netflix will drop a surprise, "true" finale on January 7 to provide the actual resolution to the story. The episode is set to justify the "Conformity Gate" theory- one of the theories that fans feel is a lie.
It is pertinent to note that to date, neither Netflix nor the show’s creators, the Duffer Brothers, have verified the existence of a secret ninth episode, let alone a specific release date. Despite the viral "Conformity Gate" speculation, the production team has remained silent on these specific fan theories.
What is Conformity Gate theory?
One of the most widely circulated fan theories following the series conclusion is the "Conformity Gate" hypothesis. Proponents of this theory argue that the events of the finale were a collective illusion rather than a genuine resolution. Fans believe that the final chapter is yet to be revealed.
These theories have gained massive traction because fans feel the aired ending lacked the emotional or narrative closure expected from such a long-running cultural phenomenon.

Stranger Things Ending Explained
(SPOILER ALERT)
The Stranger Things 5 episode 8, titled The Rightside Up, starts with the Hawkins' team launching an attack against the looming terror. While Hopper and Murray prepare the trigger for the bomb that will destroy the Upside Down, Eleven, Kali and Max team up to attack Henry in his mind. The rest of the party, inlcuding Nancy, Steve, Dustin, Mike, Will, Jonathan and others, enter the Abyss to rescue the kidnapped kids.
In the Abyss, the Hawkins gang discovers the Pain Tree, only to realise it is actually the Mind Flayer revealed in a terrifying spider-like form. As Eleven battles Henry from within the creature, the others unite on the ground — with Nancy drawing it in as bait, Jonathan and Robin attacking from above, Lucas and Mike igniting accelerants and Dustin and Steve striking from below — to bring down the monstrous foe together.
The series comes full circle with a final Dungeons & Dragons game in the Wheelers’ basement, as Mike and his friends complete their last campaign and quietly move on, symbolising the end of their childhood. As Holly and her friends rush in to start their own game, the torch is passed to a new generation — a moment the Duffer Brothers intentionally mirrored with Season 1, making it both the first and last scene they ever filmed.
With the Mind Flayer defeated and Eleven on the verge of killing her brother Henry to end Vecna’s reign, the tide turns when Will briefly overpowers him. This gives Eleven the opening to impale his body on a spire. The final blow, however, comes from Joyce, who beheads Vecna with an axe. "You fuc**d with the wrong family," she said.
