Oscars 2026: Ashwin Kumar’s visually stunning animated epic Mahavatar Narsimha has reached a major milestone, officially becoming eligible for the Best Animated Feature category at the 98th Academy Awards. The film will now compete with 35 international titles, including highly anticipated releases such as Zootopia 2, KPop Demon Hunters, Scarlet and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle. The mythological action-adventure film, presented by Hombale Films and backed by Kleem Productions, has been widely praised for raising the bar in Indian animation through its rich visuals, detailed world-building and cultural depth.

Since its release, Mahavatar Narsimha has shown an unusual trend in the Indian box office, its collections have grown steadily week after week. The film also marks director Ashwin Kumar’s debut, and his ambition to merge Indian mythology with global-level animation has been applauded both by critics and audiences. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Kumar shared how his love for Hollywood blockbusters and Japanese anime shaped his approach. He cited classics like Terminator, Jurassic Park, Predator, Alien, Transformers, and Avatar as influences, along with his lifelong admiration for anime storytelling.

Mahavarta Narsimha follows the story of the demon king Hiranyakashyap, who declares himself a god and seeks revenge on Lord Vishnu. However, his son Prahlad remains devoted to Vishnu, ultimately leading to the fierce manifestation of Narsimha, who restores cosmic balance. Audiences have praised the emotional intensity, visual scale and philosophical themes woven into the film.

Box Office Records Broken By Mahavatar Narsimha

Mahavatar Narsimha has smashed several records in India and abroad. It became the highest-grossing animated film in India, surpassing even global hits like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Frozen 2. According to Sacnilk, it earned Rs 297.74 crore gross in India. The film achieved record-breaking ticket sales, reportedly selling 38,000 tickets in under one hour, causing a major ticketing platform to crash. It reached a worldwide box office total of Rs 325.74 crore, making it one of the most successful Indian animated films ever made.
