Kalki Koechlin and director Anurag Kashyap met on the sets of his movie Dev.D in 2008. The duo fell in love and soon got married in 2011. But their promise of a lifetime ended in 2015 when they headed for a divorce. Reportedly, they experienced difficulties and irreconcilable differences in their marriage. Their shocking split became a hot topic in the B-Town. After years of getting separated, the duo now shares a cordial bond with each other. Talking about her separation, the actress recently opened up and gave insight into her past.
Kalki Koechlin recently revealed the real reason behind her divorce from Anurag Kashyap. During an interview with Zoom, the actress shared how her parents shaped the understanding of love and relationships for her and said, “My parents divorced when I was 13, and it was really bad. They were really nasty to each other and it was like cold and mean growing up between them. That was very tough. Maybe that’s why I’m divorced.”
The Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara actress admitted that her parents’ bond and the toxic environment conditioned her to sabotage relationships. She explained, “There is a certain part of you that jeopardises relationships once they start turning bad, but you are like ‘oh this happens’ because you have witnessed that as a child. I have witnessed, as a child, my parents separating and hating each other. A part of you loses the faith to walk through the worst.”

She also expressed that consciousness and therapy helped her heal from this traumatic experience. The star further talked about her difficulty post her divorce from Anurag Kashyap. She admitted that it was difficult to see each other with different partners. “The first few years after the divorce were not easy for us. Then came a point when we were like ‘we need to stay out of each other’s lives’ because it was hurtful to see the other person with somebody else, just the reminders are so strong. It does take a few years. We didn’t get to it immediately and distance helped. Now we are in a good place and we are able to catch up once in a while.”
Now, the duo shares a sweet and cordial bond. Last year, Kalki was spotted at Anurag’s daughter Aaliyah Kashyap’s wedding. On the work front, Kalki was recently seen in Nesippaya, a Tamil romantic action thriller film released in January 2025, where she played a Portugal-based lawyer. Director Anurag Kashyap is also gearing up for his upcoming movie Nishaanchi, slated for a September release.
