Shah Rukh Khan was the first actor to walk away from Don 3, much before Ranveer Singh's exit from Farhan Akhtar's directorial. After the massive success of Don and Don 2, the King of Bollywood decided against returning for the third instalment, leading Farhan Akhtar to cast Singh as the new Don. Now, with Ranveer Singh also reportedly out amid the ongoing controversy, the franchise appears to be back to square one. But what made Shah Rukh Khan say no to Don 3? Here's the full story.

Shah Rukh Khan fans thought he would reprise his role as Don when Farhan Akhtar first began work on Don 3 because he had established himself as the face of this beloved franchise.

Why Did Shah Rukh REJECT Don 3?

"It's not like Shah Rukh Khan didn’t like the script. It’s just that Shah Rukh was not fully convinced. He knows Don is an iconic role and would like to step back into the character once he’s completely confident of the script. The box office scenario is not very healthy, and he wants to be doubly sure before signing on the dotted line," according to a report by Bollywood Hungama in 2022.

"As of now, Farhan Akhtar has gone back to the drawing board, and we can hope that the next time he meets SRK, the superstar will happily sign Don 3. The fans would be on cloud nine. When the speculations around the film generated so much craze, imagine what would happen on the day the makers announce Don 3."

Farhan Akhtar began searching for a new actor to carry on the franchise after Shah Rukh Khan left. According to reports, Ranveer Singh actively pursued the position and had a strong interest in it. In 2023, the producers finally declared Singh to be the next Don.

Ranveer Singh took over the role of don, previously held by Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan. The project experienced delays and uncertainties after a promotional video created a lot of online interest.

Ranveer Singh left the movie because of creative disagreements with the producers. According to a report by Free Press Journal, Farhan Akhtar wanted to stick to his initial concept for the franchise, while the actor wanted a darker and more aggressive version of the character, with sharper language and increased violence.
