Zubeen Garg Death: In a fresh update in Assamese Singer Zubeen Garg's death case, Singapore police have said that the investigation into the death of Assam’s well-known singer is still ongoing. Garg died under unclear circumstances while swimming in the sea in Singapore on September 19. According to the Singapore Police Force (SPF), there is currently no suspicion of foul play based on their investigations so far.
In an official statement, the SPF said, “Based on our investigation to date, the Singapore Police Force does not suspect foul play in Garg’s death.” The police added that once their investigation is completed, the findings will be submitted to the State Coroner of Singapore. A formal coroner’s inquiry (CI) will then be held to establish the exact cause and circumstances of the singer’s death. This inquiry is scheduled to take place in January and February 2026, and its results will be made public after it concludes.

Furthermore, the SPF explained that a coroner’s inquiry is a fact-finding process led by the coroner. Its purpose is not to assign blame but to understand how and why a person died. The police assured that they are carrying out a thorough and professional investigation and asked the public to remain patient. They also urged people not to speculate or spread unverified information, as this could cause unnecessary confusion and distress. However, the case has taken a different turn in India. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing Zubeen Garg’s death has filed a charge sheet in an Indian court. The SIT has charged four people with murder, including Garg’s secretary Siddharth Sharma and festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahant. This has led to conflicting claims between the investigations in India and Singapore.

Zubeen Garg was in Singapore to perform at the fourth Northeast India Festival, scheduled to be held at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre on September 20, just one day after his death. On September 19, 2025, the 52-year-old singer went swimming near Saint John’s Island without wearing a life jacket. He reportedly got into difficulty in the water and was pulled out by others. CPR was administered immediately, and Garg was rushed to Singapore General Hospital. Despite medical efforts, he was declared dead in the intensive care unit at around 2:30 pm IST.
Zubeen Garg’s body was later brought back to India, where he was cremated on September 23, with full state honours, including a 21-gun salute. On September 30, 2025, his ashes were taken to Jorhat, Assam, for the traditional 13th-day Adyashraddha ceremony, held on October 1. The ceremony was attended by his family, friends, and thousands of fans who gathered to pay their final respects.
